Sons & Daughters
Criss, son of the Water and Fire Elementals, is an angry and conflicted young dragon with a buried heart of gold. While many dragons are most at home in the sea or the sky, Criss prefers to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground, thank you so very much. But if he could only embrace his Water heritage, he would find that he can breathe underwater just as well as he can breathe air!
"Do you know where Astraeus lives, D?" Darkflame asked, her eyes darting to and fro as she took in their new surroundings.
She'd never really thought about Elementals having a home, besides their territory as a whole- so far as she knew, Darkness had just wandered about his former domain as he pleased. But if Astraeus had one, it would make sense that Quintus would be near there too...otherwise, how would his Elemental find him quickly when he needed him?
The thought of seeing her friends again was a nice one, and her mind returned once more to her dream of them all gathered together in the Life realm...or maybe, some other realm even, given that Life had been a bit difficult to get to. Air, maybe? It certainly looked nice here. Even Light might do well.
"After all this, we should go somewhere nice," she said firmly, "and just relax for a while."
"Yes, actually, I do know where Astraeus lives. Fazoola instructed me to travel extensively on the island so that I would be familiar with any territory that she may want me to go. Its been quite some time since I visited Air last but I feel confident that I can get us there," D said with a glance at Eetu, as if to reassure himself that he wasn't alone in the decision making.
Eetu picked up this subtle cue and quickly nodded his head. "Yes, I have also been to Air before. I've never been to visit Astraeus but we'll figure it out. Its not like the Air Elemental can only be found there. From what I've heard, he likes to travel and may not be there when we arrive. Its just a good starting point for us."
Darkflame nodded, satisfied with their response. She scented the air, trying her hardest to pick out the scents of Selgar and, though she couldn't remember it as well, Quintus.
To her disappointment, she didn't detect either of her friends. On the other hand...
"There's somebody else here," Darkflame said, swinging her head around to look almost directly behind them. "Female, I think. Air Creation, probably."
The newcomer didn't waste any time. About eight feet tall, with silver scales which dulled to grey at her underside and snout, she faded into view before their very eyes. With a touch of alarm, Darkflame noted that she possessed an ability very similar to her own.
"The Life Ambassador?" she began. "Some important Elemental business, I suppose. I'm not stupid enough to get in the way. What do you want?" *** ooc: Decided rather than having Quintus bump into them, it could be good to instead have a local Creation appear, who will be happy to help them find out where the Ambassador can be found!
Plus, it gives us both two characters to write with! =P She'll probably disappear before I add Quintus, so that shouldn't change too much.
BIC: D and Eetu both whirled as Darkflame sounded the alarm. Her sense of smell is incredible, the two male creations unknowingly think at the same moment. Eetu feels a bit guilty that an unknown creation has been so easily able to sneak up on them but he quickly pushes it away. Feelings would only be an unwelcome distraction here. Thankfully, this strange dragoness doesn't seem to be aggressive just a little up-front.
D feels a rush of surprise and a hint of pride that he has been recognized as the Life Ambassador by a stranger. He could only assume it was due to the fact that creations had talked about him and this pleased him to no end. He didn't realize that he was starting to get lost in his own thoughts and beginning to drag the moment on when a sharp tail flick on his flank from Eetu got his attention. The orange creation cast a half-guilty, half-grateful look at his friend before returning to the stranger. She was rather brusque but that didn't bother D.
"Actually, my friends and I are not on an Elemental errand," D began.
"We're flying around Air, looking for two more of our friends. We've not seen them since before the Quake," Eetu explained.
It went unsaid that their purpose was a shot in the dark since they couldn't know for certain where Quintus and Selgar were or whether they had even survived the Quake.
"Selgar and Quintus," Darkflame supplied, still eyeing the newcomer warily. "An Ice Creation, and..."
"The Air Ambassador, yes," the newcomer interrupted. "He's easy to find. The other one...I don't know a Selgar."
Darkflame moved closer to D. She didn't appreciate this new dragon's tone- too cold and too blunt for her liking. After Kiira, she wasn't sure she should trust Creations who mysteriously appeared at convenient moments to offer much-needed help. Sure, that had sorted itself out in the end- more or less- but Kiira had tried to hurt them at first!
Eetu jumped at the chance the stranger seemed to be offering them. "Quintus is easy to find, you say? That's great! Do you happen to know where he is right now?"
Here was what the white dragon had been hoping for. He was just as anxious as his companions to find their friends. He had not wanted to trek all the way to Astraeus' home. He wondered if perhaps he had sounded too eager. This dragoness did not seem so friendly as to help them in their search.
D looked at Darkflame, noting that she had moved closer. He didn't blame her, seeing as they hadn't had the greatest record with strangers up to this point. Though, there was only one to deal with and now three of them. He wanted to say something comforting but decided against it. At least he was fairly certain this Air dragoness wasn't looking for a fight.
"More or less. He lives on the Great Island. He should have been sent to Dragonsdeep, really, but I don't think he's left this region since its discovery. You shouldn't have much trouble tracking him down."
Darkflame supposed it would make sense for the Elementals to have their Ambassadors investigate Dragonsdeep. Did Astraeus have other priorities? Or did Quintus have reasons of his own for not going?
BIC: Eetu mentally sighed. Of course D's first guess had been correct. They would have to travel all the way into the heart of the Air territory to find Quintus and, hopefully, Selgar. The white dragon had been hoping to avoid that but there it was. At least the stranger seemed friendlier as she continued speaking.
D was ever hopeful and pleased that they had met another dragon that had given them such an excellent tip. His first instinct had been correct and they were on the right track! To think that they would be reunited with their friends that very day! He noticed that Eetu did not seem as thrilled but the Life Ambassador refused to let that affect his suddenly bright mood. He flicked his tail, eager to get going but he refocused as he realized that Eetu was speaking.
"It isn't a creation's place to question what their Elemental does or does not do. Astraeus' first concern should be for his creations. The Elementals have existed since long before any of us were created and we should treat them as such," Eetu said mildly, chiding the strange dragoness.
D looked thoughtfully at this friend, agreeing with him. "Fazoola sent me to Dragonsdeep but that doesn't mean other Ambassadors had to go as well. Dragonsdeep is open to all creations just as Darkness was before the Quake. I'm certain Astraeus knows all he needs to about the new territory. I wouldn't be surprised if he went to explore it for himself!"
As an Ambassador, D took his role very seriously. He never gossiped about what he learned from his Elemental. This extended to the other Elementals and he felt uncomfortable talking about any of them. At least this conversation seemed harmless enough for the moment. Just so long as they didn't stay talking for long. They did have somewhere to be...
OOC: Just a heads up that I begin my last college semester tomorrow and I'm looking into getting an on-campus job. I will keep you informed if it interferes with my activity here.
The stranger laughed again, her lip curling into a sneer as she focused her gaze on Eetu.
"If you say so."
She went quiet, then. Darkflame was now certain that she didn't like her- nobody should talk to her friends that way! But they had more important concerns: it was good to know that Quintus had survived the quake, but what of Selgar? They needed to find them and find out as soon as possible! Darkflame looked up at D.
"Should we find this Great Island then? Seems like the best place to start!"
The little dragoness had no idea where that island was, but D knew his way around this land- he'd said as much himself. She trusted him to lead them in the right direction.
Eetu was not offended, having understood at a glance that respect was not high on this strange dragoness' list of priorities. He was grateful that she had given them much needed information but they could not dawdle where they were. Darkflame had addressed D and allowed the Life Ambassador to speak and make the decision for them. he could see that his young friends were just as eager to get going as he was. It was high time they were going.
"Yes, lets go! Thank you so much for the tip." D dipped his head courteously to the stranger before beginning to fly away.
Darkflame was worried she might go invisible again, but she didn't. She just sat there and watched them go. Darkflame didn't have time to dwell on this further, because D had already taken to the air- and so, with a clumsy unfurling of wings, she plunged forward and pulled herself unsteadily into the air.
They'd been travelling a lot these past few days. It felt harder to get airborne than usual, and she could feel the strain of so much flight in her shoulder muscles. Still, nearly there now. Once they reached Quintus, they would be able to rest.
"She said she didn't know Selgar," Darkflame piped up, finally daring to hope. "Surely that means he's alright? She would have heard of him if something bad had happened, him being the Ambassador's friend and all."
Eetu glanced thoughtfully at Darkflame. "She may have been lying. She wasn't very friendly, you realize. Though, if she recognized an Ambassador of another Elemental, she could hardly deny knowing her own. D, your thoughts?"
"You have a point. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if Selgar is keeping a low profile. If it was hard for us in Ice, just remember that Viamor is Selgar's Elemental and that makes it that much more dangerous for him than any of us. The less dragons that know Selgar is hanging around in Air, the better," D said.
D didn't notice that Darkflame seemed to be tiring. They were making good time and he was eager to see Quintus and Selgar for himself. Even with the incredible surprise of Eetu still being alive, it would be that much better to know that their other friends were also still alive. He would never forget MoonJem and he did not relish adding to his private grief.
Darkflame thought about this. She'd been so eager for confirmation that her friend was okay, that she'd ignored the obvious! The dragoness hadn't seemed at all friendly- had she been lying to them? Were they even now flying into a trap?
"That makes sense," Darkflame said doubtfully, in response to D's remark. "Still. Eetu has a point. We shouldn't get our hopes up."
She looked ahead, trying to work out which island they were headed for. There were lots of airborne islands drifting about- how was she supposed to know which was the Great Island the Air dragon had mentioned?
D knew that the Great Island was just ahead. He remembered the lake that was directly below it. He recalled his first time ever seeing it and marveling at how deep it was. He remembered how careful he had been around its banks, unwilling to fall in and test its depths. Now, he was back and no longer afraid of those peaceful waters.
After surviving Ice and Dragonsdeep, the Life Ambassador had gained much needed confidence in himself and his ability to handle whatever his life had to throw at him.
Quintus pulled free of Brackenhush and made for the edge of the island, intent on finding the place where he could best feel the wind on his face. At a time like this, the Ambassador didn't feel much like flying. But that feeling of the air rushing past, even at a time like this, was always welcome.
Quintus casually observed a trio of Creations skimming the air currents, then stopped and squinted. The orange one looked familiar. Could it be...? ***
Darkflame's breathing quickened, and every downward thrust of her wings was a little more difficult than the last. She didn't trust that she'd be able to descend safely from the island after this. She wasn't a large dragon. She wasn't an Air dragon. And she certainly wasn't a dragon accustomed to dashing to and fro for this long, without much rest.
Almost there now.
Then she saw him, and the ensuing burst of excitement made her voice even more ragged.
"Look! It's him- Quintus, I mean- over there!"
Samantha: And Paradox was amazing Dae! I enjoyed writing Adutaine opposite them. =)

Samantha: I get that Blazeh, no worries. <3 The site is pretty dead, it was just me and 27th and we couldn't keep it going on our own.
Apr 23, 2018 12:00:45 GMT
DaeSiggil: Oops, I know I haven't often helped by disappearing as I did. But still thinking about this place! <3
Apr 18, 2018 16:11:08 GMT
Verridith: Hey hon, love you guys but haven't seen anything happen since 2017 ;A; hope all are well! But have to remove you from BTACD's sister sites. I'm sorry! </3 </3 </3
Apr 6, 2018 12:22:38 GMT
Samantha: Exactly! It can be tricky, back home most of my friends are just from school, university or work. xD And it was lovely. They were all so lovely, the ones I was with spent the whole time talking about history, it was fun and edumacational.
Sept 30, 2017 10:02:29 GMT
27th: Wow! You got to have dinner with the authors? Making new friends is always nice. I know that struggle as I don't socialize like my peers.
Sept 12, 2017 18:00:11 GMT
Samantha: that great at doing haha (I don't like going out to parties and stuff, which seems to be the main way people my age socialise.)
Sept 11, 2017 23:11:00 GMT
Samantha: -looks at timestamp on last reply- Eeeek, apologies for the delay! But yeah it was AMAZING. My favourite author signed my favourite book, and we even had dinner with the authors one of the nights. Plus, I made some new friends, which I don't tend to be
Sept 11, 2017 23:10:37 GMT
27th: That sounds very cool! I would have loved going to something like that.
Aug 20, 2017 21:03:22 GMT
Samantha: It just means 'science fiction and fantasy.' So it was a conference for authors of these things, and scholars who study them!
Aug 19, 2017 21:10:27 GMT
27th: Glad you had a good time in Sweden! What is SFF?
Aug 11, 2017 16:08:48 GMT
Samantha: Sorry for the disappearance. I was in Sweden for an SFF conference- it was pretty cool!
Aug 11, 2017 10:48:27 GMT
Samantha: It's sad, yeah. We need more members to have more staff, we need more staff to keep the place active, and we need to have the place active to get more members. Sort of a vicious cycle. =P
Jul 31, 2017 16:46:13 GMT
Samantha: The problem is that the main person who likes to run contests, Riv, also has a tendency to disappear. xD And I don't have the time and the energy to run this place proper on my own.
Jul 31, 2017 16:45:38 GMT
27th: Yes, it is a lot of work. Though, I agree it could be worth the effort. As far as contests go, we've tried them here at DotE before. I don't know how well any of them worked but we it couldn't hurt to try.
Jul 30, 2017 5:53:42 GMT
R: Could try a contest?
Jul 29, 2017 4:40:04 GMT
shadow: Well. Yea. That also is a lot of work. It would be worth it though
Jul 28, 2017 4:12:51 GMT
27th: Well, recruitment would be key to that. Contacting the members we already have to try and get them to participate here would also be part of that.
Jul 26, 2017 15:52:29 GMT
shadow: I wonder what would happen if we tried to make it alive again
