Sons & Daughters
Criss, son of the Water and Fire Elementals, is an angry and conflicted young dragon with a buried heart of gold. While many dragons are most at home in the sea or the sky, Criss prefers to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground, thank you so very much. But if he could only embrace his Water heritage, he would find that he can breathe underwater just as well as he can breathe air!
It had been awhile since the twins had said their goodbyes and flew away. Astraeus was flitting about his island. Haikal was away, exploring or some such thing. The Elemental was not one of those dragons that always made sure his rider was always near him. Nor was Haikal one of those riders who always needed to be beside him. That was fine by Astraeus. The man needed his own adventures and whatnot.
The Elemental was enjoying the quietness of the day. A few birds twittered; the wind swirled around him, messing with his feathers and fur. Air grinned and started humming to himself. A dark shape on the horizon caught his attention. Hm? Now who or what was that? He focused on it, waiting for the thing to come further into view.
Oh. Ohhhhhhhh. Why hello there.
The dark blob was Adutaine. Now why was she drifting into his territory so soon after their last encounter? Astraeus had been sure she wouldn’t even set a claw in his lands for a while yet. Perhaps she had been distracted. And this was certainly the fastest way to get back to her lands. Either way, it was an opportunity he was not about to pass up.
Astraeus winged his way over slowly, giving her time to see him and start fuming or coming up with possibilities of how this meeting would go. She no doubt would come up with the worst things she could. He gave a satisfied snort before he confronted her. “Hello, Adutaine! Long time no see, eh? Have you decided to accept my invite?”
Adutaine had weighed up the positives and the negatives. Yes, navigating the Fire territory would have taken only marginally more time. Yes, the Air territory presented the possibility of another encounter with Astraeus. But Izett had been exceptionally volatile as of late and, regardless, Adutaine's interests primarily lay at the southernmost point of her own lands, which just so happened to be directly beyond those of Light. Given this, crossing through the realms of Astraeus and then Tivialous seemed like the most practical course of action. Besides, knowing that scatterbrained mess of fur and feathers, what were the odds that he would be in even remotely the same location as she had left him?
The odds, as it so happened, were not in her favour.
Adutaine ground her teeth by way of venting her annoyance, but relaxed into her customary impassive façade as Air drew nearer. While this was without doubt an inconvenience, she was not so anxious to attend to affairs in her own realm as she had been to survey that of Earth. This game he was so eager to pursue would be all too easy when compared with that he and his two ridiculous sons had earlier presented.
"Greetings, Astraeus," Time said, with a customary polite bob of the head. "Alas, I am merely passing through. You may accompany me awhile if you so wish, and regale me with tales of all that is new in these lands, but I unfortunately lack the time to explore them myself at this point in time."
“Ah! How unfortunate! I was hoping you’d be able to stay longer this time. A bit of company would be… most enjoyable.” His lips parted in a mischievous grin. He hoped she would get his drift, but he knew she would definitely say no. And that was perfectly fine by him. He just wanted to see her flustered.
“Let’s see; the new things.” Astraeus pondered for a moment. “Well, I met up with one of your creations, interesting thing; so colourfully bright, but so lost among my lands, and perhaps the strangest powers I’d ever seen. It was all so random. What were you thinking when you created him? He seems to suffer so from them. Mmm… What else?”
Astraeus launched into a story about one of his bird friends named Archie. The poor bird had gotten itself stuck in a crack in one of the pillars. He, of course, had to go save it. Then the two went merrily on their way talking to Air’s creations about this or that.
He did not mention Haikal or the happenings with Ysera and the Darklands. That was a more serious conversation for later on.
Adutaine regarded Astraeus coldly as ever at his earlier words. They weren't deserving of anything more than a blank look, and were certainly not about to be seriously taken into consideration. Once, his persona had proven an amusing distraction. Now? She understood what made him tick. She'd explored the inner workings of his mind. He was of no further use to her, unless this uncomfortable tension between Ysera and Icarus gave way to full-scale war. In which case; well, it would be useful to have him on her side, she supposed...though not the end of the world if he thought otherwise.
He's still talking...
"One of my Creations?" she inquired, cutting into his Archie story. "I don't suppose you happened to catch their name?"
Strangest powers...either he had just encountered Paradox, or he had never met that particular dragon. Though 'Creation' seemed almost too inferior a title to describe that being...she'd put so much energy into that one, it felt almost like a Lesser Elemental, only formed purely from Time.
*** ooc: People change. She probably doesn't have him as figured out as she'd like to think, I just included that phrase since it's from her PoV. xD
Tag for Torin because Astraeus is the annoyance in the title. Tag for DaeSiggil because Para gets a mention here. =)
She didn’t even bat an eye at his comments. Cool and collected like always, at least on the outside. Astraeus knew he got under her scales and irked her. At first he didn’t mean to, but then time passed and he decided if he annoyed her anyway, he should actually try.
“And then we were flying along-Archie of course had to—“
"One of my Creations?" Hmph, how rude of her to interrupt me. I was just getting to the best part! "I don't suppose you happened to catch their name?"
“Yes,” Astraeus replied after a long moment of pondering. “I suppose I did. Poor thing was looking for someone named Thalia. Or was it Thalia? Mmm, yes, I believe they were looking for Thalia.”
~~~ OOC: Ahahaha, no, no she doesn't. I don't even have him fully figured out. And Adu really really likes Paradox.
"I'm afraid I don't know a Thalia," Adutaine responded, glancing aside a moment to check for incoming storms. "But, the name of the Creation you encountered. What was it? It's always a pleasure to hear of their adventures."
She looked back to Astraeus with renewed interest. She didn't tend towards the creation of utterly bizarre dragons as a whole, so surely...if not Paradox, then it had probably just been one of her children.
What was I thinking when I Created him? Well, what do any of us think while we do these things? Curiosity. Tangibly intriguing outcomes. An exercise in power.
*** ooc: She obsesses over puzzles she hasn't solved, it's one of her major flaws. xD I couldn't get the muse to do the thing, but have a post anyway. About time I replied!
"Ah, how interesting. I wonder who Thalia is then; he never got to say who she was." He glanced her way. "Oh! Yes, yes of course. His name. He called himself Rashan. Strangest powers I have ever seen. All so random: little rodents; not being able to see me; attacking the grass for no reason. The poor thing couldn't even hunt for himself! He was starving by the time I found him. And, of course, Adutaine, I took care of him; don't worry about that. Leaving him in his sorry state would have been downright cruel. He left much better than when he came."
~~~ Tag for Rordrik because Rashan is mentioned Notes: I'm pretty sure Adutaine didn't worry about Rashan's state.
Adutaine hadn't seen that particular drake in quite some time. He was interesting, in his own way. His powers had certainly proven difficult to grasp, she thought, recalling the day he was Created. Even so...she was a little disappointed it hadn't been Paradox, whose powers still held more questions than answers.
"Rashan," she repeated. "How kind of you to take care of him, Astraeus. He's an amiable sort, if somewhat...odd, I agree. As for this Thalia, I am still at a loss. Perhaps one of us will discover who she is, one day."
The ocean lay sparkling on the horizon, a dark lump of shoreline wavering amongst it. Home. Adutaine highly doubted Astraeus would follow her there, the stinging sand was not entirely suited to his character or his form. But it was her land, built upon her power and her whims, and as such there was no place Time personally felt more like herself. *** ooc:
Torin She doesn't really care about anyone's wellbeing tbh. Except people who are useful to her, or exceptionally interesting. I like creating characters who can be played as either a 'good' character or a 'villain', Adu is one of them.
I made an assumption about the 'stinging sand', hopefully it holds true. =P
Astraeus started humming to himself; he was content. He hadn't run out of words, no, that would probably never happen. Ever. But he didn't want to speak at the moment. Silence was just as good as talking.
Air could see the glint of light reflecting off the mass of water in the distance. There, too, was Adutaine's island, covered in sand and frozen trees. Mmm, their time to exchange news was coming to an end. He could quite conceivably follow her there. The sand was... all right. A bit of an annoyance, and itchy, but easily swept away from his fur.
"Adutaine?" he broke the silence that had fallen over them. Now was no better time than to glean a bit more information about the recent happenings of the Island. "What do you think of with the Darklands and Ysera?" He fixed his blue gaze upon her, head cocking slightly.
~~~ Took me long enough, eh? Yeah, fur and sand doesn't go overly well together.
The question didn't surprise Adutaine. Such queries were to be expected, in these times, when so many were so desperate to know where they stood in relation to others. It felt as though lines were being drawn, perhaps in blood. While she welcomed such changes, finding the best puzzles and most enduring answers in times of unrest, it wouldn't do for Adutaine to set herself too firmly on either side of this divide. Or either side of either divide, if anybody besides herself was still paying heed to Viamor. Thus, she would have to approach her answer with caution.
"What happened in the Darklands is unfortunate, indeed," she said- deadpan, revealing no more amusement than she did misery, for it was easier by far to keep up this pretence than invite any true analysis. "As for Ysera, I cannot offer any true insight into her motives. I did not encounter her during my most recent excursion into the Earth lands, and we have spoken only once since the quake. If you want my opinions on more specific matters, you may need to ask more specific questions."
The small Elemental tsked. Of course, he should have asked a more specific question. Ah well, they'd get there eventually, and it wasn't like he didn't glean anything from her answer. But for now, on to other questions. Draw on this meeting for a bit longer and find what ever useful information he could.
"What do you think will happen in the future? I doubt that this particular clash is over just yet. You know how the Elementals are. Many of us do like to keep grudges far longer than necessary."
The homeward stretch. She could sense the air around her shift as they drew near the ocean. Adutaine would have smiled, were she given to that kind of behaviour. As the humans sometimes said, it is good to be home.
The question Astraeus presented did not require too much thought. It was a simple one, an attempt to determine her thoughts on any future conflict. And yes, there would be conflict. Only the foolishly optimistic could possibly believe otherwise- not too severe an event, surely, but enough to let off some passions. Enough to stir up this stagnating society. Enough to make things interesting.
"No, I believe there will be more overt confrontations yet. I suspect that you know this yourself. However, I wonder-"
Here, her eyes flashed. Something had struck her. An idea which stood entirely at odds with what Adutaine had until then understood about Astraeus and one which, if there was anything substantial to it, would prove him a far less boring individual than she'd believed. How to put it...
"Perhaps there will be some benefit in it, for some," she said, watching him carefully. "An opportunity."
Astraeus nodded, turning his face away from her. "Yes, I do know that." Adutaine had paused here, thinking of something. Something that made her watch him intently; he could feel her steady gaze on him now. Something that had made her take an interest in him. Air smiled inwardly to himself as he caught her drift.
"Some opportunities do not present themselves very often and... benefits, as you say, are a little lacking, but if one can maneuver oneself properly in these crucial times, well..." He let the sentence fade away, allowing her to come to her own conclusions herself. Astraeus looked over once more, locking gazes with her. A smile curved his lips upward, but this smile was not one he had given her previously. This smile was knowing, confident, very unlike him if one didn't know the workings of his mind.
This was a side of him that she hadn't anticipated. Crafty, perhaps. Certainly not the bumbling fool she thought she knew so well. Adutaine returned his smile, albeit with her usual detached politeness, but her mind was whirling. What was he really thinking? Power to be gained, perhaps some influence or standing? Most regrettably for Astraeus, he was not the most revered of Elementals. Perhaps that had been part of his plan all along. Could it be that this infantile persona was some sort of shield, an illusion, not holding any true sway beneath the surface?
No. Surely not, she'd known him far too long- he would inevitably have revealed unwitting clues at some point in time. Nonetheless, there was more to Air than she'd thus far concluded. And that was interesting.
"Of course. You speak well, although I am not entirely certain our comrades would be inclined to agree. Perhaps all this talk is somewhat premature- how is your new Rider working out? He is one I would be very interested in following up on."
*** ooc: I cannot for the Life of me remember if she's asked about Haikal yet, if she has just read this as she's hoping to find out additional titbits, or something. xD She's obviously interested in why Astraeus would pick a less-than-perfect Rider, but until now she chalked it up to him being a nonsensical buffoon.
"Oh, perhaps they wouldn't. They are too... preoccupied with nonsensical things that seem far more important than they are unfortunately. Perhaps it is a little premature; perhaps it isn't. I'd rather be over prepared than under." Let her chew on that. She was already treating him a little differently: paying more attention. She could have left already but he had piqued her interest. His inward smile turned into a grin.
"My rider?" He smiled at her, any hint of his change of attitude gone. He was back to being the inept Elemental she thought he was. Or she had thought. "Haikal is working out splendidly! So full of happiness and spirit. It is quite unfortunate that his body cannot keep up with his eagerness. But he works well in spite of it. You are welcome in my lands anytime, Adutaine. Ah! But how about yours? How is Aiden?"
~~~ Notes: xD no, she hasn't. Only the not-so-clever thinks he a buffoon. Which would mean almost everyone lol Astraeus is too good at playing that part. Also, I'm assuming Aiden is still her rider. You can correct me if not
Kaguya: Hope you all are well just stopped by to reminisce about the old times
Jun 7, 2021 16:51:53 GMT
Samantha: And Paradox was amazing Dae! I enjoyed writing Adutaine opposite them. =)
Apr 23, 2018 12:02:57 GMT
Samantha: I get that Blazeh, no worries. <3 The site is pretty dead, it was just me and 27th and we couldn't keep it going on our own.
Apr 23, 2018 12:00:45 GMT
DaeSiggil: Oops, I know I haven't often helped by disappearing as I did. But still thinking about this place! <3
Apr 18, 2018 16:11:08 GMT
Verridith: Hey hon, love you guys but haven't seen anything happen since 2017 ;A; hope all are well! But have to remove you from BTACD's sister sites. I'm sorry! </3 </3 </3
Apr 6, 2018 12:22:38 GMT
Samantha: Exactly! It can be tricky, back home most of my friends are just from school, university or work. xD And it was lovely. They were all so lovely, the ones I was with spent the whole time talking about history, it was fun and edumacational.
Sept 30, 2017 10:02:29 GMT
27th: Wow! You got to have dinner with the authors? Making new friends is always nice. I know that struggle as I don't socialize like my peers.
Sept 12, 2017 18:00:11 GMT
Samantha: that great at doing haha (I don't like going out to parties and stuff, which seems to be the main way people my age socialise.)
Sept 11, 2017 23:11:00 GMT
Samantha: -looks at timestamp on last reply- Eeeek, apologies for the delay! But yeah it was AMAZING. My favourite author signed my favourite book, and we even had dinner with the authors one of the nights. Plus, I made some new friends, which I don't tend to be
Sept 11, 2017 23:10:37 GMT
27th: That sounds very cool! I would have loved going to something like that.
Aug 20, 2017 21:03:22 GMT
Samantha: It just means 'science fiction and fantasy.' So it was a conference for authors of these things, and scholars who study them!
Aug 19, 2017 21:10:27 GMT
27th: Glad you had a good time in Sweden! What is SFF?
Aug 11, 2017 16:08:48 GMT
Samantha: Sorry for the disappearance. I was in Sweden for an SFF conference- it was pretty cool!
Aug 11, 2017 10:48:27 GMT
Samantha: It's sad, yeah. We need more members to have more staff, we need more staff to keep the place active, and we need to have the place active to get more members. Sort of a vicious cycle. =P
Jul 31, 2017 16:46:13 GMT
Samantha: The problem is that the main person who likes to run contests, Riv, also has a tendency to disappear. xD And I don't have the time and the energy to run this place proper on my own.
Jul 31, 2017 16:45:38 GMT
27th: Yes, it is a lot of work. Though, I agree it could be worth the effort. As far as contests go, we've tried them here at DotE before. I don't know how well any of them worked but we it couldn't hurt to try.
Jul 30, 2017 5:53:42 GMT
R: Could try a contest?
Jul 29, 2017 4:40:04 GMT
shadow: Well. Yea. That also is a lot of work. It would be worth it though
Jul 28, 2017 4:12:51 GMT
27th: Well, recruitment would be key to that. Contacting the members we already have to try and get them to participate here would also be part of that.
Jul 26, 2017 15:52:29 GMT
