Sons & Daughters
Criss, son of the Water and Fire Elementals, is an angry and conflicted young dragon with a buried heart of gold. While many dragons are most at home in the sea or the sky, Criss prefers to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground, thank you so very much. But if he could only embrace his Water heritage, he would find that he can breathe underwater just as well as he can breathe air!
Within a few hours, the river below broadened and swiftly flared out into a vast expanse of shimmering blue ocean. The world felt so open, the winds sweeping the coast jostling her fur and splashing Darkflame with strongly-scented salt spray. As they veered left, the beach itself came into view: pale yellow, a long expanse of undulating dunes, sand and rock. It was certainly different from the softer Dark shoreline to which she was accustomed, but she set eyes upon it with a feeling of massive relief- they were here, they could finally get back on track and put her ineptitude behind them.
"What now?" she asked, looking towards the Life Ambassador. "How do we find your Creator? I'm guessing she would be further inland-" here, she glanced towards the visible mass of grassland and foliage; "-but where?".
This was unfamiliar territory to Darkflame, and it was only the knowledge that her friend's position of influence would keep her safe here that enabled her to think so clearly as she did. *** tag! (just to let you know I've started this, as I said I would) 27th
Home. D was elated to finally be back in the Life territory. He had never actually arrived by way of the beaches and so the trip had been as new to him as it had been to Darkflame. Of course, he hadn't actually told her that. The route was simple and the remainder of their flight had been uneventful.
"We head for the Eye. That's the forest where Fazoola is most often found. It's not that much further. We should be there shortly. We'll be flying through the Ring. Bison and hippogriffs live there, which I believe I mentioned before," D said.
Feeling happier than he had been for some time, the large orange dragon dipped low in flight and then spiraled up beside Darkflame once more. He was hardly graceful and such a maneuver was rare for him but it showed his strength of feeling at being home.
Darkflame glanced at the land ahead. Was this it, then? Almost there after what felt like days, though in reality it had only been about two? She wondered again what Fazoola would be like. Kind, of course. Maybe a little secretive, going by those mountains which seemed designed to keep pretty much everyone out...but kind, surely. She was the Elemental of Life itself! A dragon like that could hardly be bad news...she hoped.
"Yes, you did mention them!" said Darkflame happily, smiling at her friend's uncharacteristic twirl. She sorely wished she could pull off such a manoeuvre. "I've never seen a hippogriff- never even heard of one, before you told me about them. I look forward to seeing them."
She surged forward with renewed energy, glad to be away from the ocean at last. Below her stretched the beach, which brought to mind her plans to meet with all her friends there, someday. The dragoness scanned it with a critical eye. There wasn't a lot of plant life, but even so; she could easily imagine running about there with Selgar, D, MoonJem, and maybe even Quintus if he felt like it. ***
ooc: sorry for the delay on the other thread, a reply will be coming shortly.
BIC: The beach passed by below them. Open grassland spread out like a green sea with a darker green smudge in the distance: the Eye. As was his custom, D looked about him, trying to spot the bison. There they were! They were a distance away, which meant he couldn't see any hippogriffs.
The Life Ambassador hoped that his friend would get to see the hippogriffs and the bison up close. Not like they wouldn't have time after they met Fazoola but still, D was eager for Darkflame to see his home. He hoped that, once his mission was complete, Fazoola would not ask anything more of him. He wanted to take a break, meet up with his and Darkflame's other friends. If his Elemental had something else for him to do, it meant that that would have to be put off.
"Once we reach the trees we'll start walking. The Eye isn't very big so it'll only take a few minutes more to reach the Willow," D said, looking at Darkflame, not wanting to miss seeing her reactions to the Life territory.
OOC: Oh dear. Meeting Fazoola will be great...until she tells them about MoonJem.
The thermals rising up from the beach were unfamiliar to her. Darkflame wove to and fro a moment, before adjusting her wings and allowed herself to be held aloft on the currents of warm air. They'd done a lot of flying over the past day or so, and it was gratifying to be presented with this little glimpse of relief. After allowing herself to relax for several seconds, she quickly wheeled around to face D, smiling broadly.
"Even the land here is magic!" she exclaimed. "Let's go, D."
Darkflame turned back around and continued onward, winding from thermal to thermal and flapping unsteadily in the areas in between. She'd never been anywhere like this before. It was...strange. But not scary at all. At least, not here on the beach...she tried her best to focus on that, and not think about what might lie ahead. ***
ooc: A reply at last! Sorry for taking so long/it being so short, I'm somewhat preoccupied with a roleplay event on another site at the moment (which should be done in a couple of weeks!).
The Life Ambassador watched the Darkness dragoness as she flew. Darkflame was a dear friend and he was elated to see her enjoying his home. The thermals came off of the ocean and mixed and swirled with the land breezes that stemmed from the Ring and the Twin Rivers. The transitions were easy and there was hardly ever no air here. While not blatantly obvious, there was life everywhere in the territory even in the smallest of things.
D's telepathic range was short, lasting only about the average of what another dragon's voice would. So, he couldn't call out to Fazoola but he could feel her. He smiled broadly at Darkflame and flew a swift circle around his slower friend.
"Darkflame, Fazoola is coming. She usually flies Snake's Mouth at least once a day and she's coming to the beaches. We can wait here for her or go to meet her, whichever you prefer," D said.
"Oh," was all she could say at first. She scanned the forest ahead once more, but could see no sign of the Elemental. Not that she knew what she looked like anyway, but...the small furry dragon turned back to D, and blinked.
"If we fly towards her, couldn't we end up going right past her? We should probably wait here."
She was still excited about meeting the Life Elemental, but this excitement was tempered by no small amount of anxiety. What if Fazoola found her...lacking? What if she couldn't hide her disappointment? And what if she didn't want to let Darkflame stay here, in this place, with these wide windswept beaches and welcoming, sheltering forests? She'd never met an Elemental besides her own, except Viamor of course, and that didn't really count. So she didn't know what to expect. Should she incline her head? Lower her stance submissively? Avoid eye contact? What her own friendly Creator expected, and what D's expected, might be two entirely separate things...
She sat down, curling her tail around her body and shuffling her wings, and waited restlessly for the Elemental to arrive.
"No problem, Darkflame," D said, lighting on a dune where the dark smudge of the forest was visible.
The Life Ambassador couldn't hear the birds calling from this distance but he didn't have to wait long for Fazoola to come into sight. She was a larger version of himself but she was far more vibrant than her Ambassador and she exuded calm. Her great form flowed easily through the air and D marveled at his Elemental's beauty and grace. Recalling that he was not alone, he reluctantly pulled his gaze away to look at Darkflame. He was about to say something reassuring but just then Fazoola flew over his head and lighted down in the sand.
Fazoola smiled broadly at her Ambassador, "D, I'm so pleased to see you once more. I'd like to hear your report as soon as possible but I see you are not alone." Fazoola rested her warm gaze on Darkflame. "You must be Darkflame, one of Icarus' creations. My name is Fazoola, the Elemental of Life. Thank you so much for being a friend to D. He is still a young dragon and good friends are wonderful to have in life."
The Life Elemental was so much more than Darkflame could ever have imagined. Her scales seemed almost to cast their own shine, in reds and oranges and regal golds. She was larger than Icarus and, as Darkflame gazed upon her, she felt a sense of awe that reminded her of how she'd felt looking upon her own Creator for the first time. Only this one was breathtakingly alien, and stirred something in the dragoness' soul which even Icarus had failed to compel.
This was the embodiment of Life itself.
As the Elemental landed close by, Darkflame completely forget how she'd intended to behave. She stood and stared, spellbound by the vision before her. Everything life was and ought to be seemed reflected in this bright-hued dragoness. Then Fazoola smiled- an all too common, everyday gesture- breaking the spell. Darkflame blinked, remembering herself just in time to drop down into a submissive crouch when Fazoola turned to her.
"Um- you're welcome," she managed to stammer out. "Yes, they are. And I am. And thank you. Nice to meet you."
At seeing his friend crouch, D frowned. He had never seen a non-Life creation greet his Elemental before and it hadn't occurred to him that they would feel the need to do something like that. If they had been alone, D would have given his Elemental a far warmer greeting and then gotten down to business but with Darkflame, it had to be a little different. Thankfully, Fazoola understood and watched her creation interact. The Life Ambassador walked over to the Darkness creation and gently nudged her.
"Darkflame, Fazoola doesn't need you to bow or anything silly like that. She isn't like that. Haven't I told you already that she's really nice? She much prefers to be treated just like any other dragon," D said, sitting close enough to brush sides with Darkflame.
"No, I didn't think she wasn't nice-" she whispered frantically, alarmed at this accusation. "I just- I didn't know, I wasn't trying to...thanks."
She quickly stood up, flicked her ears twice in embarrassment, and glanced up at the Elemental once more. Perhaps D was used to it, he'd probably met so many Elementals that he'd lost count. But for her, this was only the second she'd ever encountered on good terms. Darkflame could almost feel the raw energy radiating from her.
It didn't help that this was the Elemental of Life, of all things.
"Hello, Fazoola," she said, doing her very best to salvage the situation. "I, um...this territory seems very nice."
Fazoola kept her expression carefully neutral. She could feel how anxious Darkflame was. D had mentioned this in passing but Fazoola had not expected it to be this bad. Perhaps she had better discuss this with Icarus at some point. What had happened to his little creation that she was this way?
Life mentally shook her head. Now was not the time to begin thinking about a potential future discussion with another Elemental. Some would call it meddling but she was Life, after all. She was a peacemaker and preferred when things were going smoothly. If it was in her power to remedy a situation, she would do so.
Fazoola stretched out her great form, right there on the beach. It wasn't something she did often but she was doing so now, hoping it would make Darkflame more comfortable. She crossed her forelegs neatly in front of her, tail stretched out behind her. There, that was better. She was now eye-level with D.
Darkflame really was a smaller creation, now wasn't she? Stop getting distracted, Fazoola mentally chided herself. Darkflame had spoken and she had almost missed it!
"Yes, it is a refuge for any who need peace and quiet. You don't find that often in other territories. Then the Quake happened and made everything worse. What did the two of you think of Dragonsdeep?"
Dragonsdeep. "Um..." Darkflame struggled to find the words. "It was...different, that's for sure. I mean, the Dark territory had lots of...trees, and things. But now there's just a lot of caves, and mud and stone and- well, a few plants. Some pretty glowing fungi. But not a lot, compared to Icarus' old lands. I think he preferred those too...not that he doesn't like his new ones, of course."
She glanced at D, wanting to hear what he had to see. She'd gotten hints of what he thought from their discussions on the way there, but it would be interesting to see what he said now that he was actually making the report to his Creator. Fazoola did seem nice, he was right about that, but it was one thing to chat to your friend and a whole other to make a full report to your liege. ***
ooc: Sorry if it's a bit short, wasn't really a lot to say. I've given you some material though, and will hopefully be slightly more prompt with future replies!
Fazoola let out a low note of sympathy, "Yes, losing everything that you have known must have been very difficult for you." The Life Elemental then looked to her Ambassador to hear what he had to say.
The orange dragon sat up a little taller. "As you know, Fazoola, Icarus opened up Dragonsdeep to everyone who wanted to explore his new territory. That was certainly nice of him but I don't know how wise that truly was. It's a foreign place and dangerous." D went into an explanation of meeting Kiira and the entire episode with the worm. "So, I don't know that every Dark creation is pleased about their new home but Icarus seems to be making the best of it. I would not recommend Dragonsdeep as a safe place to travel to. That worm was only what we met in our brief foray into the tunnels. Who knows what could be lurking further in? What could be disturbed by the influx of dragons?" The Life Ambassador shook his head slowly, his lavender eyes worried.
Fazoola lay deep in thought for long moments. Then, she seemed to focus on her company once more. "Ysera went too far. I fear that this is only the beginning of what could be a very bad time for the island. We should be safe enough with the Fang Mountains and the ocean on our borders but those that would be most affected by any monster that Dragonsdeep has would be Light and Air." No mention of Death but that was to be expected. "Thank you, D. You did well for your first assignment for me. I must consider what my next move should be. Until I need you again, you are free to do as you please."
D looked immensely happy at his Elemental's praise. He smiled broadly at Darkflame because it meant that they could travel to find their other friends now.
D was smiling at her though, so surely the danger wasn't too great...it sounded as if he didn't like Dragonsdeep either, and she didn't blame him. It was...well, dark. Gloomy. Dank. Not the most inviting place...poor Icarus, losing his beautiful old lands and receiving a hollow mockery like that as compensation.
Darkflame shifted her weight slightly and cleared her throat.
"So...what are you going to do about Air and Light?" she asked, anxiously. "Do you want us to...find them? I mean, I've never met them. I don't know if that's safe. But surely they need to be warned about the dangers, in case..."
Her voice trailed off as she awaited Fazoola's answer. Quintus was an Ambassador, and surely he and Selgar would be able to look after each other well enough. But she would feel much safer if the two were there with them, on the beaches, fishing and running and maybe exploring the territory a little.
*** ooc: You're free to reply with Fazoola's honest opinion. I'm not trying to make her send them to those lands, just thought Darkflame might wonder whether she wanted them to, if that makes sense. xD
Alternately, I'm perfectly happy to roleplay Fazoola (or whoever) and Tiv, if she wants to inform him at some stage. I need to use him more, I had plans with Virdinan but their roleplayer hasn't been around a lot lately.
Samantha: And Paradox was amazing Dae! I enjoyed writing Adutaine opposite them. =)
Apr 23, 2018 12:02:57 GMT
Samantha: I get that Blazeh, no worries. <3 The site is pretty dead, it was just me and 27th and we couldn't keep it going on our own.
Apr 23, 2018 12:00:45 GMT
DaeSiggil: Oops, I know I haven't often helped by disappearing as I did. But still thinking about this place! <3
Apr 18, 2018 16:11:08 GMT
Verridith: Hey hon, love you guys but haven't seen anything happen since 2017 ;A; hope all are well! But have to remove you from BTACD's sister sites. I'm sorry! </3 </3 </3
Apr 6, 2018 12:22:38 GMT
Samantha: Exactly! It can be tricky, back home most of my friends are just from school, university or work. xD And it was lovely. They were all so lovely, the ones I was with spent the whole time talking about history, it was fun and edumacational.
Sept 30, 2017 10:02:29 GMT
27th: Wow! You got to have dinner with the authors? Making new friends is always nice. I know that struggle as I don't socialize like my peers.
Sept 12, 2017 18:00:11 GMT
Samantha: that great at doing haha (I don't like going out to parties and stuff, which seems to be the main way people my age socialise.)
Sept 11, 2017 23:11:00 GMT
Samantha: -looks at timestamp on last reply- Eeeek, apologies for the delay! But yeah it was AMAZING. My favourite author signed my favourite book, and we even had dinner with the authors one of the nights. Plus, I made some new friends, which I don't tend to be
Sept 11, 2017 23:10:37 GMT
27th: That sounds very cool! I would have loved going to something like that.
Aug 20, 2017 21:03:22 GMT
Samantha: It just means 'science fiction and fantasy.' So it was a conference for authors of these things, and scholars who study them!
Aug 19, 2017 21:10:27 GMT
27th: Glad you had a good time in Sweden! What is SFF?
Aug 11, 2017 16:08:48 GMT
Samantha: Sorry for the disappearance. I was in Sweden for an SFF conference- it was pretty cool!
Aug 11, 2017 10:48:27 GMT
Samantha: It's sad, yeah. We need more members to have more staff, we need more staff to keep the place active, and we need to have the place active to get more members. Sort of a vicious cycle. =P
Jul 31, 2017 16:46:13 GMT
Samantha: The problem is that the main person who likes to run contests, Riv, also has a tendency to disappear. xD And I don't have the time and the energy to run this place proper on my own.
Jul 31, 2017 16:45:38 GMT
27th: Yes, it is a lot of work. Though, I agree it could be worth the effort. As far as contests go, we've tried them here at DotE before. I don't know how well any of them worked but we it couldn't hurt to try.
Jul 30, 2017 5:53:42 GMT
R: Could try a contest?
Jul 29, 2017 4:40:04 GMT
shadow: Well. Yea. That also is a lot of work. It would be worth it though
Jul 28, 2017 4:12:51 GMT
27th: Well, recruitment would be key to that. Contacting the members we already have to try and get them to participate here would also be part of that.
Jul 26, 2017 15:52:29 GMT
shadow: I wonder what would happen if we tried to make it alive again
