Sons & Daughters
Criss, son of the Water and Fire Elementals, is an angry and conflicted young dragon with a buried heart of gold. While many dragons are most at home in the sea or the sky, Criss prefers to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground, thank you so very much. But if he could only embrace his Water heritage, he would find that he can breathe underwater just as well as he can breathe air!
D relaxed and returned Darkflame's smile, vastly relieved. This time, he adjusted his own flight to match her's. He flew beside her now and the mountains were now in sight. He felt that they looked so unwelcoming to him because he knew what they were really like. His friend, of course, saw something completely different.
"I know that you could never go back to the old Darkness territory but if you had a choice, where would you choose to live?" D asked.
The orange dragon hoped that he had not hit upon a touchy subject. Dragonsdeep was still so new, after all. Thinking on it, D felt so close to Darkflame but that was from shared experience. What did he really know about her? This flight back to the Life territory would give him ample opportunity to find out.
bic: Darkflame blinked, taken off guard by his question. A large part of her wished D hadn't asked it, for she wasn't sure of the answer herself. Obviously, yes...her old home, if she was able, would have been her first choice. She wished that she hadn't taken it for granted, assumed that it would always be there, bright but mysterious in all the right ways. It stung still to think of it but, out here- with the land spread out below like a gorgeous tapestry- Dragonsdeep could have been a dream. The dragoness closed her eyes a moment, picturing those dank tunnels and recalling the stale smell of the air and dirt...that was the reality now, but it felt faded, like a nightmare fleeing before the sun.
Still, it was there. And would she live there if she had the choice? Probably not, but aside from the Ice lands and now those of Light, she hadn't fully experienced any other. She'd passed by Darkness' border with Death and it gave her an uneasy feeling- all wasted land and foul green fog; so that wasn't really an option either. Ice would have been fine, in spite of the bitter cold, if Selgar's Creator had been nicer and he was able to live there...but still, not ideal. Light, then? It was pretty enough, but Darkflame didn't know anybody here and doubted she would enjoy feeling so isolated...Life sounded wonderful, but she had yet to see it.
"I don't know, D," she said simply. "Your home sounds nice, but I haven't seen it yet. I suppose...mmm, maybe there or Air. I haven't seen Air either but it doesn't sound too bad, and Quintus and Selgar are both there now, I think. So I would know some dragons, at least."
*** ooc: The mountains in the distance I referred to were actually the Tivialians, not the Fangs. Whoops. xD I should probably have said that, I wouldn't have described the Fangs like that- I would have gone off their description.
BIC: D nodded his head thoughtfully. He appreciated Darkflame's honesty and understood that his question was a difficult one to answer.
"If you'd like and Fazoola doesn't give me another mission to go on, we could travel to Air together. I wouldn't mind seeing our other friends again. I'd like to know how they are, after the Quake. I understand what you mean. I don't think I could ever live somewhere that I didn't know any other dragons. Though, I'm sure you could make friends anywhere you went, Darkflame. You're a great dragon to know."
OOC: Ah, now I see. That actually makes more sense of course. As I mentioned in a reply a few posts back, they would not have reached the Fang Mountains that quickly! Should I change my previous post or should we just go with it?
Also, I'm with Darkflame. No one could have predicted that the Darkness territory would be swallowed up by the sea, thanks to the Earth Elemental's anger.
bic: Darkflame's ears pricked up and she lifted her head as D spoke. That sounded...well, marvellous, she supposed. But there had to be a better word than that! It just seemed so...dull. And the thought of a reunion made the Dark Creation feel all warm and tingly, surely another word would do the sensation more justice!
As D finished speaking, Darkflame's smile first flickered and then broadened. She adored her friends, but she didn't think she deserved them sometimes...not with how much of a coward she'd been lately, anyway. So to hear D say that of her felt really quite special.
"Thanks D. And that would be great! I'm sure Quintus wouldn't be hard to find, being an Ambassador and all. And Selgar will probably be with him. As for the quake..."
Her smile faded as she considered this. It didn't always occur to her that dragons in other lands could have been affected by the same disaster which had so ravaged Darkness...still, Quintus and Selgar would be fine! They were smart, and the Air territory was...well, Air...they were probably on one of those floating islands or something when the earthquake happened, they would be just fine.
"I'm sure they're okay," she said, with less than total conviction.
*** ooc: D is so sweet. The first time I read this piece, it made me happyful. xD
Reply is meh, I'm sorry. My Darkflame muse is not doing so well mayhaps. Hopefully things will pick up again soon!
Seeing Darkflame's smile, D was pleased. What he had said was true and he meant it. He was glad that the Darkness creation understood that. He believed that things would go well. They would make it through the Fang Mountains.
They would travel to the Air territory. They would find their friends. It all seemed so simple. Yet, D knew from experience that life was not simple, no matter how much one wanted it to be. He pulled back, not wanting to get drawn into his own head as he had before.
The orange dragon noticed his friend's face fall and he knew he had to reassure her. "They are OK. They were with us when we faced Viamor, remember? They can handle themselves. Not to mention, the Air territory is full of the Floating Islands and the Earthmotes. They probably watched the whole thing happen from one of those."
The Life creation of course had no idea that he had almost read his friend's mind. Even if he had, it wouldn't matter. Just so long as it worked.
Darkflame felt uneasy at the prospect. Perhaps, as an extension of his telepathy, her friend could not only place words inside the minds of others, but also hear ones which were already there?
She shook the thought aside. Of course he can't! For one, wouldn't he have known of Kiira's intention to harm them well in advance, if he'd been able to see her thoughts? Or perhaps he had known...but it had ended so well, maybe he'd just wanted to play the whole thing out, to try and reason with her? But there was no way he could have foreseen the arrival of the giant worm, which had ultimately been the reason the three of them even considered working together...
If you can read minds D, you'd better let me know right now, she thought. A little more aggressively than she would have liked to have thought the notion, and she was fully prepared to apologise and defend herself if he had heard her, but the thought of D being a mind-hearer didn't sit well with her. Dragons' thoughts were meant to be their own.
She looked at D, waiting to see if he would reply. But if he couldn't hear thoughts after all, then...she would just look really weird, standing around like this. And it was only fair to comment on what D had told her- regardless of how he'd got the information, it was reassuring to know that he agreed their friends were probably alright.
"Erm...thank-you," she managed to choke out. "Yes. I hear there are a lot of floating islands."
D looked expectantly at Darkflame, waiting for her to respond. He wanted to know if his words had had any effect on her. Then, he noticed that she seemed to be giving him the oddest look, rather than responding. What? What was it?
Did he still have blood on his face or what? Why hadn't Darkflame told him? Why wasn't she saying anything? He looked around, just to make sure that Darkflame hadn't seen something in the distance to make her act this way. No, not that he could see.
"Darkflame, are you-" D began before she cut him off.
The orange Life creation blinked. Well, she had taken her time about that.
"For a moment there, I thought you were trying to read my mind or something, the way you were staring at me," D said with an easy laugh.
The strangest coincidence! She blinked, uncertain how to react. Was he...was it merely that, a coincidence? Or could he be toying with her? She was at a loss for words, and entirely unsure how to sort this out.
Darkflame glanced down at the world below; at the green foliage flashing by, the monotony broken only by the occasional bright clearing. Eyes averted from the Ambassador this time, in case what D had said had just been an expression, she collected her thoughts and concentrated on a particular one:
Please, D. If you can hear minds, I would really like to know right now.
Then she looked back at D, and smiled hesitantly.
"Yeah...sorry. I was thinking about something else entirely."
"I did that to you earlier. Its only fair you to get to do the same to me. Flying gives a dragon a lot of free time to think. Especially after what you've been through recently, Darkflame, you must have a lot on your mind," D said.
The Life creation scanned their surroundings once more. No other dragons in sight but they were on course for the Fang Mountains. They would be there soon enough. Then they could take a break before starting up their journey in the morning. Meanwhile, it was a beautiful day to be flying with a friend.
She trailed off, debating whether or not to ask her friend aloud about his abilities. She was not a brave dragon, and while she could tolerate conflict with those who disliked her, the potential for conflict with friends was a different matter entirely. But surely it wouldn't hurt to ask...D was her friend, and he was many things, but he had never seemed impatient or unkind!
"I was just wondering," she began, hesitantly. "Seeing as you...well, obviously you can talk to me with your mind. So maybe, I guess, it's like I'm hearing your mind. But can you hear my thoughts as well? Like, if I tried to direct a thought at you, would you be able to hear it? Or does it not work like that?"
She glanced over at him, eagerly awaiting his response. ****
ooc: so mediocre, I'm very sorry. In any case, this will likely be my last post before I go away tomorrow. I'll be able to reply again in about five days. =)
BIC: D cast a thoughtful glance at Darkflame. He had never thought about it quite like that before. Telepathy was basically him communicating using his thoughts, now wasn't it? It had taken his friend to point it out to him. Then, something clicked.
"No, I can't read minds. I've never heard of someone having a power like that. I don't think I'd like it very well if someone could read my mind...Darkflame, is that why you were staring at me like that just a moment ago?" The large orange dragon couldn't stop a smile from spreading across his face; the thought was certainly an amusing one.
"Sort of," she said. "I just thought, maybe...but that's good, I don't think I'd like it much either."
The mountains were getting closer every minute. Darkflame wondered, for the umpteenth time, what the dragons beyond it would be like. What Fazoola herself would be like. But first, as D had said, they would have to rest the night amongst those mountains. Did dragons live there? What would they be like? She was just as excited to find out as she was nervous.
BIC: D also turned his face away, seeming to realize that he had embarrassed Darkflame. He looked ahead of them at the mountains that now loomed in the distance. Home was so close for him and an ever constant reminder that Darkflame no longer had that. He really hoped that the Dark creation would like the Life territory. Fazoola and Jester, of course, weren't even an issue.
D knew that in Darkflame's place, he would not like suddenly becoming homeless. Though, she seemed to be coping well, which was always encouraging.
OOC: Shall we time skip to them landing in the evening?
ooc: Okay! I'll write in a skip now, if that's okay, and edit if not. =)
bic: They flew onward for some time, trading snippets of conversation interspersed with periods of comfortable silence until, at last, in the early evening, they arrived near the foot of the Fangs.
Darkflame was tired. She hadn't slept in over a day, and her eyelids felt heavy, though she forced them to remain fully opened. Up close, the mountains looked far more imposing than they ever had from the Darkness border. Ominous, even, though perhaps that was more to do with the rapidly approaching dusk. D had been right, mountains could look ominous!
She looked to her friend, not looking overly forward to the task ahead (even from where they hovered amongst the foothills, she could hear the wind whistling angrily amongst the high peaks), and spoke for the first time in several minutes:
"So what now, D? Are we going to wait around here somewhere? Or do we need to climb higher...?"
D looked at his friend. The mountains made her look even smaller. He sensed that she was not as confident as she had been earlier, in the brightness of day. He glanced around for a moment, just to be sure that they were where they needed to be in order to start off well in the morning. Then, he tried not to show his own nerves and smiled at Darkflame reassuringly.
"We're stopping for the night, Darkflame. We'll get to flapping in the morning. For now, lets land. Over there looks good, unless you see something better?" The orange dragon pointed his muzzle towards a copse of trees.
Samantha: And Paradox was amazing Dae! I enjoyed writing Adutaine opposite them. =)
Apr 23, 2018 12:02:57 GMT
Samantha: I get that Blazeh, no worries. <3 The site is pretty dead, it was just me and 27th and we couldn't keep it going on our own.
Apr 23, 2018 12:00:45 GMT
DaeSiggil: Oops, I know I haven't often helped by disappearing as I did. But still thinking about this place! <3
Apr 18, 2018 16:11:08 GMT
Verridith: Hey hon, love you guys but haven't seen anything happen since 2017 ;A; hope all are well! But have to remove you from BTACD's sister sites. I'm sorry! </3 </3 </3
Apr 6, 2018 12:22:38 GMT
Samantha: Exactly! It can be tricky, back home most of my friends are just from school, university or work. xD And it was lovely. They were all so lovely, the ones I was with spent the whole time talking about history, it was fun and edumacational.
Sept 30, 2017 10:02:29 GMT
27th: Wow! You got to have dinner with the authors? Making new friends is always nice. I know that struggle as I don't socialize like my peers.
Sept 12, 2017 18:00:11 GMT
Samantha: that great at doing haha (I don't like going out to parties and stuff, which seems to be the main way people my age socialise.)
Sept 11, 2017 23:11:00 GMT
Samantha: -looks at timestamp on last reply- Eeeek, apologies for the delay! But yeah it was AMAZING. My favourite author signed my favourite book, and we even had dinner with the authors one of the nights. Plus, I made some new friends, which I don't tend to be
Sept 11, 2017 23:10:37 GMT
27th: That sounds very cool! I would have loved going to something like that.
Aug 20, 2017 21:03:22 GMT
Samantha: It just means 'science fiction and fantasy.' So it was a conference for authors of these things, and scholars who study them!
Aug 19, 2017 21:10:27 GMT
27th: Glad you had a good time in Sweden! What is SFF?
Aug 11, 2017 16:08:48 GMT
Samantha: Sorry for the disappearance. I was in Sweden for an SFF conference- it was pretty cool!
Aug 11, 2017 10:48:27 GMT
Samantha: It's sad, yeah. We need more members to have more staff, we need more staff to keep the place active, and we need to have the place active to get more members. Sort of a vicious cycle. =P
Jul 31, 2017 16:46:13 GMT
Samantha: The problem is that the main person who likes to run contests, Riv, also has a tendency to disappear. xD And I don't have the time and the energy to run this place proper on my own.
Jul 31, 2017 16:45:38 GMT
27th: Yes, it is a lot of work. Though, I agree it could be worth the effort. As far as contests go, we've tried them here at DotE before. I don't know how well any of them worked but we it couldn't hurt to try.
Jul 30, 2017 5:53:42 GMT
R: Could try a contest?
Jul 29, 2017 4:40:04 GMT
shadow: Well. Yea. That also is a lot of work. It would be worth it though
Jul 28, 2017 4:12:51 GMT
27th: Well, recruitment would be key to that. Contacting the members we already have to try and get them to participate here would also be part of that.
Jul 26, 2017 15:52:29 GMT
shadow: I wonder what would happen if we tried to make it alive again
