Sons & Daughters
Criss, son of the Water and Fire Elementals, is an angry and conflicted young dragon with a buried heart of gold. While many dragons are most at home in the sea or the sky, Criss prefers to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground, thank you so very much. But if he could only embrace his Water heritage, he would find that he can breathe underwater just as well as he can breathe air!
Darkflame followed her friend's line of sight, her gaze coming to rest upon the same dark tunnel. Was that the one they had come out of? She couldn't remember now. Probably not.
"I don't know," the Dark Creation said, as she sat back on her haunches. "Hopefully nothing too dangerous. We should probably wait for Icarus to make sure before we wander too far."
She looked back over her shoulder, at a small group of dragons examining the fungi on the cave walls. A Creation whom she recognised caught her eye, and Darkflame smiled, though she wasn't sure if he would be able to see the gesture from where he was. It was good that so many dragons she knew, even if only vaguely, had gotten through the earthquake unscathed. Her heart still ached for home, but at least they were down here together.
"How long are you planning on staying, D?" she asked, turning back towards her friend.
She hoped he would be there for at least a few days. Darkflame didn't mind being alone, but Dragonsdeep was a lonely solitude, rather than a reflective kind. She hoped to find a cave with the view of the stars, or maybe a shortcut to the surface, sometime before her friend left for home.
D flexed his claws in the spongy ground. Fazoola had told him to report back to her on Dragonsdeep. Though, she hadn't said anything about trekking it alone. Would it be disrespectful to Icarus to leave the group and head out alone? D shook his head slightly as he thought on this.
Of course it would. It would also be foolhardy and possibly dangerous. Don't take unnecessary risks. The words rang through D's mind. He wasn't sure if Fazoola had created him with this caution of if he had learned it on his own.
No matter the origin, it was sound advice that the Life creation would follow. Besides all of that, he didn't really want to leave Darkflame. He could understand why his friend would wish to stay with her creator, at least now, in all new territory.
"Don't worry, Darkflame. I wasn't created yesterday you know," D said teasingly. Continuing in a more thoughtful vein he said, "As for how long I'm staying...it depends. How long will this tour last? What will we see and experience in these tunnels and caves? What happens if someone gets hungry and there is no prey?...If I collect enough information that I believe will satisfy Fazoola, that's when I'll leave."
The orange creation nodded his head once, firmly, having made up his mind. His creator was never far from his thoughts. As her Ambassador and having been given this specific task, he would do his best.
Darkflame had been hoping for a more specific answer, but she tried not to let her disappointment show.
"That's alright, D," she said. "I can't imagine the tour will last too long- it would take all year if Icarus wanted to show us every tunnel! I bet he's just trying to find some nice places for us to live. This cave is a promising start but, like you said, there's no prey..."
And no view of the outside, she mentally added.
Darkflame again looked around. It was very pretty, but she was becoming accustomed to this area, and to a degree was itching to move on. At least until they managed to find some prey, or something. She herself wasn't hungry- she'd managed to scrounge a few fish before descending into the tunnels- but it would be a good thing to know for future reference. As they'd discussed earlier, there could be rabbits. There could also be...mice, maybe, although they weren't really much more than a morsel, even to a small dragon like her.
"D, what's that?" she asked, indicating a small hole in the ground near one edge of the pond. "Perhaps something lives there?"
It could just as easily have been formed by somebody pulling out a stone, she supposed. It was too damp and...sweet smelling...down here, for her to tell whether or not anything might live in the hole. But if something did, then surely that would mean other things must as well. And that would render the place more or less liveable!
D cast another glance in Icarus' direction and smiled, "No, I suppose you're right."
The orange creation looked at the hole his friend had indicated and walked towards it, head lowering to inspect it better. Like Darkflame, D was out of luck in the nose department. The cloying sweetness of the air was rather distracting and did not give much room for any other scents to get through. Deciding that the direct way was the best way, he put one clawed paw forward and pressed it into the hole. It was much the same spongy wetness that was elsewhere in this particular grotto.
D looked back at Darkflame, "Not sure. Even if something does live there, I highly doubt it'll shows itself now with all these dragons about."
The others were starting to leave. Icarus had already disappeared down a different tunnel, the other dragons filtering after him in ones and twos. Compared with the spaciousness of the cavern, the tunnel looked narrow and claustrophobic. Darkflame took a moment to get her bearings, and then nodded at D, turning away from the curious hole in the ground as she did so.
"That's probably true. I suppose-"
Her voice cut out abruptly and she blinked twice, not entirely sure if she'd seen what she thought she'd seen. But she had, it was there, in a tunnel adjacent to the one into which their companions were vanishing. A face, a draconic face, but unlike any she'd ever seen. It seemed...off, even in this dim light. Contorted- familiar in its overall design, but startlingly unfamiliar in some particulars. As Darkflame looked on, the being trembled violently, and retreated backward, deeper into the tunnel. The shadows closed in around it, and it was gone.
"D," she said, at a loss for words. "Did you see that?"
It was gone, but Darkflame couldn't help but feel concerned. Where had it gone to? Was it some strange guardian, like those creatures posted at the entrance? Was it a bizarre Creation of some kind? Was it, perhaps, something else altogether? Some extraordinary native wildlife? If that was the case, she hoped that it was friendly, whatever it was. No doubt she would be encountering it or its brethren often, if this was to become her home.
**** 27th- Pine said I could control Icarus in a limited capacity, so I'm guessing this is okay. Pine, I've tagged you, so you can tell me if not. =)
Maybe we should finish up our section soon, and either leave D and Darkflame for the present or start a new thread with them? It might be nice, if we can think of a way to get them away from the main group. It would speed things up a bit. Although finishing up works too, as I have exams in about a month and a half and that could make my replies slow. xD
D removed his foot from the hole, shaking it lightly to remove the drops of moisture that had gathered there. Focused on this, he heard Icarus and other dragons leave but he wasn't really paying much attention. As long as Darkflame didn't suddenly take off on him, then that was alright with him. The orange dragon stepped away from the hole and towards his friend, concerned. He looked around, but wasn't sure what she was talking about, though he did see quite a few entrances leading off from the one they were in now.
"No, I didn't see anything. Are you talking about Icarus and the others leaving? I know the direction they headed off in, if you'd care to follow them. While sticking with your Elemental is nice, I was beginning to think that I'd like to travel away from the larger group for a while. This way, I can gather information in my own way, without having to worry about keeping up with a group...or being held back by them, either."
"Would you care to join me, Darkflame? I'd really like the company. If you don't, I understand."
D had risen to his feet and looked hopefully at his friend. Doing things with friends was always better than going strictly solo. However, if Darkflame was really unwilling, he wouldn't want to force her to join him, either.
I'm OK with either, actually. I'd really like to start a separate thread with the two of them going off on their own but if you don't think you'd be able to devote enough time to that, then we can leave them right here.
As D began to speak, Darkflame shook her head and muttered.
She didn't register much of what was said next, too busy trying to work out what had bothered her so much about the dragon in the tunnel. The lighting was bad, surely that explained why it had seemed so strange, right? Surely it was just a fellow explorer? A fellow explorer gone off on its own, in search of adventure. A tad foolish maybe, but understandable. Why did she let silly things get to her this much?
"Would you care to join me, Darkflame? I'd really like the company. If you don't, I understand."
Hearing her name, the Dark Creation snapped back to the conversation at hand. She stared at D blankly, not sure what he was talking about. Then she registered that most of the others had left the cavern, that they were standing alone beside the pool. He was...asking her to move on? Of course! It would be silly to hang back here on their own.
"Of course," she said. "Sorry, D, I was miles away. Let's go." ***** 27th
We'll see how this goes. She may get a bit concerned when she realises she misunderstood. xD But if they stay together, we can start a new thread soon. If not; well, you can start one with new buddies, anyway!
D let out a happy rumble, loud enough to make the water in the cavern ripple. It was a stark contrast from his usual telepathy but, since he had entered Dragonsdeep, he felt like he was really beginning to start on his Elemental's mission.
"This is great, Darkflame. Now this is what Fazoola wanted me to do," D said, moving away from the center of the cavern and heading straight for the tunnel where Darkflame had seen the strange dragon.
The orange Life creation, however, had not seen any strange creature but it was a tunnel that led away from the main group. While he wasn't adverse to meeting back up with them, he also didn't want to do that too soon. He wanted to get some experience down in the tunnels on his own. Otherwise, what useful information could he possibly tell Fazoola? Besides that, it was Darkflame's home and the sooner she began to get the feel for the place on her own, the better.
Darkflame started as D moved towards the tunnel where the stranger had disappeared. Surely he would turn back toward the others? No...no, he wasn't stopping or changing course. Perhaps he was confused.
"Erm, D? Didn't the others go that way?"
With her snout, she gestured towards the tunnel through which the majority of the group had departed. She'd seen at least one dragon venture into a different tunnel, and one or two remained in the cavern with them, but that was of little concern. The only thing which had gone into this tunnel was the strange dragon, and D hadn't even seen that! So it wasn't like D was following a particular friend, whose company held more appeal than Icarus'. Rather, he was heading towards a strange tunnel for no apparent reason at all which; in Darkflame's mind, naturally meant that he was confused. He must have gotten it mixed up with the tunnel containing the main group, somehow. If he realised quickly and they hurried, they might still be able to catch up!
Besides, Darkflame had no desire to run into the stranger if it returned. Despite what she told herself, it hadn't exactly looked friendly, and in any case something about it just didn't feel right.
D paused to look at Darkflame. Once he had gotten her consent, he had expected his friend to continue on with him towards this new tunnel. Yet, that wasn't what was happening. She was hesitating, for some reason. He looked briefly to the tunnel where Icarus and the others had gone down and then back at Darkflame, bemused.
"Yes, that is the way they went. So, I've decided to head this way instead...Do you have a better idea, Darkflame? Would you like to take the lead," D offered.
Perhaps the Life creation had been too quick to take the lead. Maybe Darkflame wanted to get a taste for Dragonsdeep without his big bulk in the way. D whisked his tail once along the spongy ground, wondering what his friend could possibly be thinking.
Samantha: And Paradox was amazing Dae! I enjoyed writing Adutaine opposite them. =)

Samantha: I get that Blazeh, no worries. <3 The site is pretty dead, it was just me and 27th and we couldn't keep it going on our own.
Apr 23, 2018 12:00:45 GMT
DaeSiggil: Oops, I know I haven't often helped by disappearing as I did. But still thinking about this place! <3
Apr 18, 2018 16:11:08 GMT
Verridith: Hey hon, love you guys but haven't seen anything happen since 2017 ;A; hope all are well! But have to remove you from BTACD's sister sites. I'm sorry! </3 </3 </3
Apr 6, 2018 12:22:38 GMT
Samantha: Exactly! It can be tricky, back home most of my friends are just from school, university or work. xD And it was lovely. They were all so lovely, the ones I was with spent the whole time talking about history, it was fun and edumacational.
Sept 30, 2017 10:02:29 GMT
27th: Wow! You got to have dinner with the authors? Making new friends is always nice. I know that struggle as I don't socialize like my peers.
Sept 12, 2017 18:00:11 GMT
Samantha: that great at doing haha (I don't like going out to parties and stuff, which seems to be the main way people my age socialise.)
Sept 11, 2017 23:11:00 GMT
Samantha: -looks at timestamp on last reply- Eeeek, apologies for the delay! But yeah it was AMAZING. My favourite author signed my favourite book, and we even had dinner with the authors one of the nights. Plus, I made some new friends, which I don't tend to be
Sept 11, 2017 23:10:37 GMT
27th: That sounds very cool! I would have loved going to something like that.
Aug 20, 2017 21:03:22 GMT
Samantha: It just means 'science fiction and fantasy.' So it was a conference for authors of these things, and scholars who study them!
Aug 19, 2017 21:10:27 GMT
27th: Glad you had a good time in Sweden! What is SFF?
Aug 11, 2017 16:08:48 GMT
Samantha: Sorry for the disappearance. I was in Sweden for an SFF conference- it was pretty cool!
Aug 11, 2017 10:48:27 GMT
Samantha: It's sad, yeah. We need more members to have more staff, we need more staff to keep the place active, and we need to have the place active to get more members. Sort of a vicious cycle. =P
Jul 31, 2017 16:46:13 GMT
Samantha: The problem is that the main person who likes to run contests, Riv, also has a tendency to disappear. xD And I don't have the time and the energy to run this place proper on my own.
Jul 31, 2017 16:45:38 GMT
27th: Yes, it is a lot of work. Though, I agree it could be worth the effort. As far as contests go, we've tried them here at DotE before. I don't know how well any of them worked but we it couldn't hurt to try.
Jul 30, 2017 5:53:42 GMT
R: Could try a contest?
Jul 29, 2017 4:40:04 GMT
shadow: Well. Yea. That also is a lot of work. It would be worth it though
Jul 28, 2017 4:12:51 GMT
27th: Well, recruitment would be key to that. Contacting the members we already have to try and get them to participate here would also be part of that.
Jul 26, 2017 15:52:29 GMT
shadow: I wonder what would happen if we tried to make it alive again
