Sons & Daughters
Criss, son of the Water and Fire Elementals, is an angry and conflicted young dragon with a buried heart of gold. While many dragons are most at home in the sea or the sky, Criss prefers to keep his feet firmly planted on the ground, thank you so very much. But if he could only embrace his Water heritage, he would find that he can breathe underwater just as well as he can breathe air!
For a few more moments, Desmond was content to simply enjoy the view as Jester had, allowing himself to get lost in thought a while. He was soon drawn back into reality, however, as he caught sight of a bright figure approaching out of the distance. Fazoola, the Life Elemental. Even as she was still a ways off, he found himself shifting uncomfortably. Odd as it was, he felt uneasy around her, especially without Eien. And as she drew closer, although he did what he could to hide it, the feeling intensified. It wasn't simply being at the opposite end of the Elemental spectrum that did it- not entirely. That was only part of it. He'd determined some time ago that she was unaware of his current state- she'd surely have said something by now otherwise. But he did have to wonder what would happen should she find out, and the scenarios he came up with frightened him. Still, that was no reason not to be polite, and so when Fazoola inquired as to his well-being, he responded with a civil smile. "I am well, Fazoola," he said, bowing his head respectfully for a moment, "Thank you. I should hope you can say the same." Meeting her gaze while he spoke was difficult, but he managed. "I hope you don't mind that I dragged Jester all the way out here," he went on, eyes flicking back and forth between the two for a moment, "But I can assure you we didn't run into too much trouble." Jester, he had decided, would be the better person to explain their journey in detail, so he left it at that.
Fazoola had to smile at Desmond's politeness. It was completely reasonable that he should be just as uneasy in her presence as she was in his. She would have liked to curl her tail around but there wasn't quite enough space for that so she settled for allowing it to press close against her flank, part of her long tail going over the cliff. She could feel the pressure of the strong wind but it didn't bother her too much, not with all of the tension she felt just being in the Death territory. She glanced down at her own Rider and he gazed calmly back up at her.
"Yes, I certainly can. Though, you can well imagine my surprise when I leave my Rider in one territory and find him in the neighboring territory when I return! I should have expected it. I know that you are a wanderer, Desmond. Of course you could have happened upon Jester. I do not blame you. Jester has a healthy dose of curiosity and, since you say that you did not get into too much trouble-and I believe you, for lying to me would not be wise-then there is no harm done."
Fazoola may have gone on, forgetting that she was speaking to Death's Rider, when Jester placed a hand on one massive forepaw. The Life Elemental took a deep calming breath then. She couldn't let herself get carried away, not here. She couldn't help being protective of her older Rider but it didn't mean that she could just blame Desmond, for it certainly wasn't his fault. Jester smiled reassuringly at Desmond, hoping that the Death Rider wasn't too alarmed by this unexpected meeting with Fazoola.
Jester could only imagine what it would be like if their positions were reversed and he was meeting Eien without Fazoola. A shudder ran through him at the thought and Fazoola cast him another quick glance, as if imagining what he was thinking.
"As I told Desmond, Fazoola, I won't be taking this trek, again. I'm just glad I got the opportunity to come and Desmond was an excellent guide," Jester said, with another of his elaborate bows, hoping to break the tension that he could clearly feel on the clifftop.
Throughout Fazoola's response, Desmond remained quiet and inwardly on edge. He nodded when appropriate, of course, but for the moment found himself a bit tongue-tied. But luckily, it seemed more on his part wasn't really necessary for the time being. The subtle threat she issued was rather unexpected- almost more so than her appearance here had been- but duly noted. Not that he'd have even considered giving the Life Elemental false information concerning the well-being of her Rider, of course. As it had been before, Jester's smile did manage to somewhat reassure the Death Rider, but not by much. He wished he could say otherwise, and under any other circumstances- namely not facing Fazoola all by himself- he might have. Much to his chagrin, he was already thinking of how to make the encounter as short as possible. Surely Life and her Rider wouldn't want to remain much longer than he did, perhaps even less so, given where they were... Forcing these thoughts from his mind, Desmond put on another smile, saying, "All things considered, I wouldn't expect you to do so. But it was nice to have company for a while, all the same." Glancing back out toward the horizon, he went on after a short pause. "Anyway, I won't keep the two of you here an longer than you want to be," he said, a wry look crossing his features, "And I imagine that want was exhausted some time ago. So unless there's something else...?" While silently berating himself for such cowardly behavior, Desmond made as though to leave, but hesitated long enough for any potential answers.
OOC: Oh, dear. I'm actually not looking forward to the meeting between Life and Death. Though, it should be good! Who doesn't love conflict, especially such a one that has existed since the very beginning?
BIC: Fazoola's eyes flashed thoughtfully for a moment. Desmond was giving them an out and she was going to take it. Jester was tired after his rather longer-than-expected trek and she knew that he wouldn't hesitate to leave, either. Deciding that she had been rather disrespectful to the Death Rider, she made up for it by lowering her head to his level. She hoped to put him at ease by getting more personal with him and she was about to smile when she breathed in Desmond's scent...and froze.
There was definitely something wrong with the Death Rider. He smelled of Death, that didn't surprise the Life Elemental in the least. Their location and more importantly, Desmond's role in the Isle of Dragons, would mean that he would smell of it more than others would. However, no matter his role or where he was, she should have been able to detect the life underneath that, as she was able to do with all living things...and she could not. This fact greatly disturbed Fazoola.
Fazoola had always been one of the most transparent of Elementals. She found it difficult to hide her emotions as she felt them and, in truth, rarely tried to. She had no qualms about being honest. So, everything she felt in that brief moment flashed through her amber eyes, quite clear to Jester (who had moved forward to stand by his Elemental's muzzle) and to Desmond. Jester, for his part, couldn't understand what was disturbing Fazoola so much; he had never seen her like this before.
This was more than just their current location. Fazoola had found out something that greatly surpassed that and Jester wanted to find out what it was. However, since it seemed to concern Desmond, the Life Rider decided to put off his questions until he and his dragon were alone. Fazoola still hadn't relaxed, her body remaining as stiff as a body with rigor mortis. Her amber gaze pierced Desmond, as if he were a piece of prey that she had in her sights.
"Desmond, I must speak with Eien. When you see her next, tell her to meet me at the Light and Death border at her earliest convenience. I shall be waiting. Come, Jester, it is fully time that we took our leave," Fazoola said, her tone as stiff as her body had been only a moment before.
Jester's eyes widened. Fazoola was surprising him this day because he could not figure out what she was so upset about. He cast a confounded and slightly apologetic glance in Desmond's direction. The Death Rider had apparently gotten under his dragon's hide like no one and nothing else ever had before. The older man climbed aboard Fazoola with the ease and grace of a man half his age and didn't give a backward glance as the golden dragon took to the sky with just one flare of her bat-like wings.
That meeting with Desmond in the Light territory had been just a whim. Jester had never expected it to end the way it did. However, he couldn't say he regretted the time he had spent with Desmond but he did wonder what would happen next...
ooc: Really? I know I am. X3 Should be very interesting to see how things play out. And while we're on that subject, did you want to come up with an outline or something for that beforehand?
ic: For a moment, Desmond thought that this just might be it; Fazoola certainly seemed eager to take the opportunity to leave. But for reasons he would likely never know, she chose to linger a while longer. He stiffened the instant her head began moving toward him, debating whether or not to back away, only to find his feet refused to obey him in his panic. Unable to conceal his discomfort any longer, he flinched away on feeling her breath brush against his skin. Too late. What little color there was drained from the Rider's face as he watched the Life Elemental's realization take hold, frozen to the spot. Never before since he'd come here had he felt so vulnerable. She knows. The thought bounced wildly around his head, replacing all others. Even the sudden rush of concern he received from the wisp failed to register. She knows. So then what would she do about it? The way the large golden dragon was staring at him now, he wouldn't have put much past her. But, after what felt like an eternity of silence, she finally spoke up, and took to the sky shortly afterward. The breath he hadn't known he'd been holding finally escaped Desmond's lungs as he flopped into a seated position. Leaning forward, he rested his forearms against his knees and ran a hand over his eyes. He needed to calm down, he knew, so for a while that was all he focused on. Further sensations of curiosity and worry issued from his ghostly companion, and in turn he gave a weak, appreciative smile. But, knowing he couldn't just sit there forever, he eventually returned his attention to what Fazoola had asked of him. A meeting with Eien... Still shaky, Desmond forced himself to his feet and began making his way back through the Shade. He knew better than to keep the Life Elemental waiting.
Samantha: And Paradox was amazing Dae! I enjoyed writing Adutaine opposite them. =)

Samantha: I get that Blazeh, no worries. <3 The site is pretty dead, it was just me and 27th and we couldn't keep it going on our own.

DaeSiggil: Oops, I know I haven't often helped by disappearing as I did. But still thinking about this place! <3

Verridith: Hey hon, love you guys but haven't seen anything happen since 2017 ;A; hope all are well! But have to remove you from BTACD's sister sites. I'm sorry! </3 </3 </3
Apr 6, 2018 12:22:38 GMT
Samantha: Exactly! It can be tricky, back home most of my friends are just from school, university or work. xD And it was lovely. They were all so lovely, the ones I was with spent the whole time talking about history, it was fun and edumacational.
Sept 30, 2017 10:02:29 GMT
27th: Wow! You got to have dinner with the authors? Making new friends is always nice. I know that struggle as I don't socialize like my peers.
Sept 12, 2017 18:00:11 GMT
Samantha: that great at doing haha (I don't like going out to parties and stuff, which seems to be the main way people my age socialise.)
Sept 11, 2017 23:11:00 GMT
Samantha: -looks at timestamp on last reply- Eeeek, apologies for the delay! But yeah it was AMAZING. My favourite author signed my favourite book, and we even had dinner with the authors one of the nights. Plus, I made some new friends, which I don't tend to be
Sept 11, 2017 23:10:37 GMT
27th: That sounds very cool! I would have loved going to something like that.
Aug 20, 2017 21:03:22 GMT
Samantha: It just means 'science fiction and fantasy.' So it was a conference for authors of these things, and scholars who study them!
Aug 19, 2017 21:10:27 GMT
27th: Glad you had a good time in Sweden! What is SFF?
Aug 11, 2017 16:08:48 GMT
Samantha: Sorry for the disappearance. I was in Sweden for an SFF conference- it was pretty cool!
Aug 11, 2017 10:48:27 GMT
Samantha: It's sad, yeah. We need more members to have more staff, we need more staff to keep the place active, and we need to have the place active to get more members. Sort of a vicious cycle. =P
Jul 31, 2017 16:46:13 GMT
Samantha: The problem is that the main person who likes to run contests, Riv, also has a tendency to disappear. xD And I don't have the time and the energy to run this place proper on my own.
Jul 31, 2017 16:45:38 GMT
27th: Yes, it is a lot of work. Though, I agree it could be worth the effort. As far as contests go, we've tried them here at DotE before. I don't know how well any of them worked but we it couldn't hurt to try.
Jul 30, 2017 5:53:42 GMT
R: Could try a contest?
Jul 29, 2017 4:40:04 GMT
shadow: Well. Yea. That also is a lot of work. It would be worth it though
Jul 28, 2017 4:12:51 GMT
27th: Well, recruitment would be key to that. Contacting the members we already have to try and get them to participate here would also be part of that.
Jul 26, 2017 15:52:29 GMT
shadow: I wonder what would happen if we tried to make it alive again
