In a land of mystery and secrets, beauty and terror; the ten Elemental dragons reign. These most powerful of dragons, the very essences of the elements themselves, are more ancient than any living thing you can imagine.
The ten dragons each wield the power of one of the Elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Light, Darkness, Life, Death, Ice and Time. They can control and use their own element at will and, additionally, create lesser dragons out of it.
These dragons, known as Creations, are physically less powerful than the Elementals. They might have up to two abilities, but these are inferior when compared with those of the Elementals. Often, their powers do not relate to their Creator's in any way; and they can't, obviously, have complete control over an Element (though some small aspect of an element, such as the ability to make flowers grow or something for an Earth Creation, is fully possible).
The land which these majestic creatures call home is a huge island: nameless, and home to many wonderful sights. The island is divided into ten territories, one for each Elemental. An Elemental's territory is suited to its respective Element. For example; the Ice territory is a cold expanse of snow and ice. More information on the terrain, climate, and so on for each territory can be found under their respective catagories on this forum.
Once Created, a Creation usually chooses to live in the territory of its Creator. But this is not always the case. Some Creations spend their lives traveling about the land, while a rare few others decide to live in a territory belonging to an Elemental that is not their Creator.
Aside from the scale of their powers, and the sheer amount of life experience they have, there is another thing that sets the Elementals apart from the Creations. Elementals, but not their Creations, are allowed to have human or elven Riders. These are taken from their homes far away on the mainland, and given the privilege of serving as Riders for as long as the dragons see fit. Upon being chosen, a Rider is generally gifted with a weapon (by their Elemental) that sometimes has a mild Elemental ability.
Now, I know this is a lot to take in at one time, but there are another group of dragons, besides the Creations and Elementals: Lesser Elementals, which are the Sons and Daughters of the Elemental dragons. They, like their parents, are permitted to seek Riders if they so wish. But their powers are usually closer in scale to those of a Creation, though not always- some are much more powerful than their Created brethren. In addition, their powers are typically related to those of their parents, only not as potent- for example; Kohaku and Kession (children of Light) can both create illusions. Unlike their parents, Lesser Elementals are mortal (i.e; they can die). However, their lifespans are typically much longer than those of Creations.
