This board shall be used to relate Fazoola’s history as I think of it. This is mostly for my own usage but if you have questions, comments or concerns, feel free to send me a private message.
Fazoola’s First Rider: Fazoola, was the one of the (if not the) first Elemental to have a Rider. Elves were the first sentient beings, other than dragons, that Fazoola had ever met. They instantly fascinated her. They were intelligent, social creatures and what they did with their magic amazed her. Seeing that Fazoola, as Life Elemental, was harmless to them and even held very similar views to their own, the elves welcomed the dragoness into their company and learned much from one another.
Fazoola’s first Rider influenced her immensely and shaped her character to this day.
Fazoola befriended a certain forest mage named Ta’zeen. Ta in the elven language means ‘high or lofty’. Z is rarely used in the elven language but is usually a transition word such as ‘and, or, of’. Ee means ‘to grow’ and adding n to ee means ‘to grow green things’. So, Ta’zeen literally means ‘high or lofty grower of green things’.
This was very fitting for this elf. He was tall and very reminiscent of a willow tree in stature. He could make any plant grow with ease. They absolutely adored him, especially willow trees. In appearance, Ta’zeen was snow white in skin tone and his hair grew to the small of his back.
Ta’zeen’s hair was peculiar in that it was like willow branches in appearance, even changing as a willow tree does with the seasons. As befit a forest mage, he always wore green, either a robe or tunic. Then, he had dark brown moccasins, when he wore shoes at all. He had dark brown, kind eyes and slim, quick hands. He had an open face that rarely lost its smile.
In personality, Ta’zeen was open, intelligent, kind and fun-loving. He quickly made friends with Fazoola and they were soon rarely apart. Ta’zeen was the one that referred to them affectionately as Fazzy and Tazzy. Then, Fazoola got word of the First War of the Elements. She had to go back to the island; Ta’zeen agreed to come with her and there they were, right in the bloody middle of it.
Ta’zeen happened to be one of the vegetarian elves. There was no way Fazoola, at her size, could sustain herself on just plants and Ta’zeen respected that. When his Elemental had to make a kill to eat, he would separate himself from her until she was finished. Fazoola had always done her best to protect Ta’zeen. One day, having finished her meal, she went off in search of her Rider…and found his dead body, viciously torn apart.
The Life Elemental was just in time to see her Rider’s elven body become one with a nearby willow tree. As it often happened with forest mages, their bodies returned to their surroundings when they died. The loss of her Rider in such a violent fashion changed Fazoola forever. She grieved for five hundred years after his loss, not taking a Rider during this time. After that, she took Riders but only humans, never having the heart to return to the realm of elves and befriend a new elf…though there is always speculation that this could one day change.
Fazoola began as a pacifist but when the War took Ta’zeen from her, this view changed. While she still hates to fight, she will not hesitate to defend herself physically, rather than the mere mental strategies she had used before. She trained herself during her grieving period to make sure that, if the need arose, she would not fall victim to a senseless attack. It was also during this time that she learned of and mastered all of her own powers as the Life Elemental. She teaches all of her Riders how to fight and defend themselves.
After the War, for Fazoola, the Creation of Many Elements, as a symbol of peace, was an abomination. Peace had been hard won and what had she won? A strip of land in exchange for her beloved Rider’s life. That was hardly a fair trade. So, Fazoola refused to be a part of the Creation of Many, seeing at once that it was a silly ruse that would never work and tried to persuade the Elementals of this, all to no avail.
Fazoola never shares with her Riders about those that have come before them. For the Life Elemental, this is the only taboo topic. Thankfully, none of her Riders have crossed this line, respecting the ancient wisdom of their dragon (though some have been almost painfully curious about the topic). For Fazoola, as is indicative of her Element, feels the loss of life deeply, especially for those closest to her, her Riders. She always has a grieving period for each of her Riders (though none anywhere near as long as for Ta’zeen); for her, the best way to move forward from her loss is to never look back…except in the most private of moments (which, for her, happen to be rare).
Due to the fact that Ta’zeen died when Fazoola was not with him, she hates to be separated from her Riders. It is why she is one of the few Elementals to always have an Ambassador, even in times of peace. She prefers to be prepared for even an inkling of conflict. Keeping an Ambassador that can deliver messages and scout out other territories is one of the best ways for her to do that. If her Riders ever found her clinginess to be stifling, they never say, understanding that this is just the way their dragon happens to be.
Also, Fazoola hates to be referred to be any nickname, especially Fazzy. This was only what Ta’zeen ever called her and to hear it from anyone else can be torturous. Fazoola makes certain that all of her Riders know this about her and they have respected that, even if they are puzzled by it. Open as she is about almost everything else, they decide that it is understandable that she remains at least somewhat of a puzzle. Jester is the only one of her Riders to have ever crossed this line and once he said it, the look that crossed his dragon’s face made him immediately regret it and vow to never do it, again.
Lastly, Fazoola does not hold a grudge. She does not know which Element killed her beloved Rider. So, she decided that she would not hold it against anyone. After the War, when she got her own strip of land, she enforced her borders with the Fang Mountains and Twin Rivers (only leaving the beaches open, since Olorzxx was hardly a threat) and deemed the Life territory forever be known as Snake’s Mouth. If any dragon could get through those barriers and the vicious reputation that preceded them, then they were welcome to the richness of the Life territory beyond.
The Willow: The willow that absorbed Ta’zeen’s body was in the very heart of Snake’s Mouth, in the Eye. The willow is tall and grand and Fazoola, during her rare private moments, comes to this tree to reflect on the elf that was her first Rider. She feels his presence strongly there when she does come but the moment ends all too soon. Though, much to her chagrin, legend abounds on this most splendid of trees. Fazoola is the only one who knows its true history but that hasn’t stopped the creations that call the Eye home from spreading their stories.
Legend has it that the willow is the wisest living thing in Snake’s Mouth. If anyone has a desperate question that needs answering, if they shelter in the willow’s low-hanging branches and listen closely to the whispering of the wind, then they will find their answer. Others say that during unnatural silences in the woods, when even birds stop singing and the wind stops playing in the treetops, if one looks closely, they will see the willow taking a walk through the Eye, as if to check on the other trees. Case in point: no tree in the Eye fell when the Great Quake occurred. No dragon knows whether this is all just legend or truth because neither Fazoola nor the Willow is telling.
