The Sands of Eternity, some time past. The halfling Aiden is fourteen years old, yet his appearance is that of a somewhat younger child.
The sands of her realm had never much bothered Adutaine. Even stirred by the wind, they were little more than minor nuisances. Minor nuisances, minor inconveniences tapping at her scales like gnats. She wondered briefly where this analogy had come from- certainly, the scaled dragoness had not experienced the bite of gnats personally- before deciding that it must have been Ysera. Ysera was the master of analogy and wit, when the mood took her. Trust her to impart such irrelevant ponderings.
Adutaine had momentarily let her thoughts wander from her charge, but now she turned to examine him once more, pale eyes betraying none of the inner workings of her mind. The unfamiliar youngling naturally struggled with the sand to a greater degree than Time, but he did not seem about to give up. Quite determined then, was her young charge. She had chosen wisely. But, then again, didn’t she always?
The Elemental gave the boy a small smile of assurance- just a small one- before looking ahead. The winds were not too strong at present, but she knew that they would pick up later in the day. She could feel the changes around her, the flickering aura of her domain of Time. Perhaps the boy would be able to withstand the storm, perhaps not. In any case, they would hopefully be long gone by the time the weather changed.
Adutaine turned back to the boy, who had almost caught up to her by now.
“We must press onward, little halfling,” she said, eyes impassively flickering to his face to observe his reactions. “I expect you are tired? At the end of the day, when you have completed your task, you may rest.”
She looked away, starting to move once more across the boundless sands. Adutaine was a good judge of character, and she was confident that this young creature would make a fine Rider. Not brilliant (for only rarely did she find one who was truly brilliant), but certainly fine. And he was an elf-human hybrid, if he was to be believed. What a fascinating find! These were so rare, so valuable, and now she had the chance to actually study one for herself. If Adutaine had been inclined towards such showy gestures, she would have beamed with delight. As it was, she simply ruffled her wings slightly and resumed walking.
